Designing for nonprofit realities
Budget-proportionate recommendations. A recommendation that assumes resources the organization does not have is not advice. We scope to what can actually be funded and sustained, and we say when a smaller, well-executed approach will produce better results than an ambitious one.
Measurement that serves the organization, not only the funder. Reporting requirements are the usual trigger for evaluation work, but a well-built framework should also tell leadership whether programs are working. We design for both audiences.
Capacity that transfers. Our capacity-building work is structured so the organization can operate what we build. Documented procedures, trained internal staff and usable templates matter more than a polished report.
Governance and institutional development
A significant portion of our nonprofit work involves institutional development — establishing or strengthening the governance structures, policies, procedures and internal controls that organizations need as they mature.
This is unglamorous work with substantial consequences. Clear delegation of authority, documented financial and operational procedures, defined board and executive responsibilities, and functioning committee structures materially affect an organization’s ability to withstand audit, satisfy funders, manage risk and survive leadership transitions.
